TWO IMPORTANT NOTES
- To view everyone’s entries on the same map, everyone has to use the same
Google username and password. Because of this, you will have the ability
to change or delete entries added by other people in the class. Deletions
and changes are unrecoverable. Please be respectful and leave other people’s
entires alone.
- If you’re using a Mac, the steps below only work
in Firefox. Many of the editing features of Google Maps aren’t available
in Safari. Windows users can use either Firefox or Internet Explorer.
INSTRUCTIONS
- If you’re using photos you’ve taken yourself, the first thing
you need to do is upload your photos to the Internet. I suggest uploading
them to the blog like you have your other photos. You do this by bringing
up the usual screen to write a post and scrolling down to where you upload photos. Once you’ve browsed and selected a photo and clicked the “Upload” button, the photo is up on the server.
The link to photos uploaded to the blog site is:
http://brst440.commons.yale.edu/wp-content/uploads/
followed by the file name of your photo.
Ex. http://brst440.commons.yale.edu/wp-content/uploads/img_1812.JPG
You’ll need to know this link address to add a photo to Google Maps.
- Go to the class blog site and click the “Google Map” in the upper-right.
- Click the “Sign inâ€? link in the upper-right (if you’re already logged in to your personal Google account click “Sign out” first). Enter the username and password that you can get from Prof. Isenstadt.
- Click the “My Maps” tab in the upper-left.
- Navigate around the map to find the location you wish to highlight.
- You can outline an entire neighborhood using the Line or Shape tool in the toolbar at the top of the map. You can also add Placemarks for specific buildings, etc.
- To add a Placemarker, click once on the placemarker icon in the toolbar to begin. Click again when the “X” is over the spot you want to mark.
- Click the “Rich text” link at the top of the editing window that pops up
- Type or paste text into the box. You might want to include a by-line.
- To add a photo, click the Insert Image icon on the left of the new toolbar. A window will pop up. Here is where you will need to enter the address to your photo mentioned above. For example:
http://brst440.commons.yale.edu/wp-content/uploads/img_1812.JPG
NOTE: This is case-sensitive so if the file extension is .JPG then you need
to use capital letters.
- Click “OK” to save your placemarker.
- To highlight a neighborhood, click once on the Line or Shape icon in the toolbar and click again where you want to begin your line or shape. Everywhere you click a new segment will be drawn. Finish your shape by clicking back on your starting point (just play around with it and you’ll figure it out). Click “OK” to save.
- To change or delete something, click on it again.
